estimate of the variability

Terms from Statistics for HCI: Making Sense of Quantitative Data

Random phenomena have variability. In some cases we know what this is based on existing literature, previous studies or theoretical calculations, but at other times we need to estimate the size of the variability, usually from data gathered in an experiment or study. For example, we might calculate the interquartile range of our measured data and use that as an estimate of the variability of the underlying phenomenon.
